Harris County’s reputation as one of the DWI capitals of the country, has always concerned Houston personal injury lawyers. Last week, it was the turn of a few innocent children traveling in their family car, to be injured in an accident caused by an intoxicated driver.

A drunk motorist driving a white Chevy truck crashed into a suburban carrying a family of seven. Several witnesses at the scene reported that the pickup had been swerving wildly, in classic signs of intoxicated driving, just before the crash. A few seconds later, the pickup rammed into the other car. There were a total of four children in the car. One three-year-old child was ejected from the vehicle.  A baby and an 8 year old child were also injured.

Harris County police officers later found cold beer cans in the Chevy pickup. It was very clear that the motorist had been drinking. He was arrested, and is likely to face charges. Fortunately, Harris County police officers say that all the injured children are likely to make a complete recovery. That’s certainly good news for the family, and we pray that the children recover fully.

This was the second accident in the Houston area that left children seriously injured. Earlier last week, six children who were walking with two women in southwest Houston were injured, when a white minivan careened off the road, and hit them. One of the children had been in a stroller.  All eight individuals had to be taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries, and at least two of them are believed to be in a critical condition. News sources say that the driver of the minivan admitted that she had not been paying attention to the road at the time of the accident.

Anytime children are involved in an accident, we are especially touched. As parents and Houston accident lawyers, we know that children are at a higher risk of being involved in serious motor vehicle accidents than adults. In fact, motor vehicle accidents are the biggest cause of unintentional death in children below the age of two.

Parents, be extra careful out there when you’re traveling with children. Make sure that your children are safely restrained, either in child safety seats or seat belts as appropriate for their age. Be especially careful this summer when many are traveling for family vacations.
