Rockwall County Teacher Indicted on Sexual Assault Charges–Houston Criminal Defense Lawyers

Posted by John J. Kahn, Jr. | Feb 18, 2013 | 0 Comments

A grand jury in Rockwall County has indicted a high school teacher on felony charges of sexual assault. The teacher Kevin Lawrence Carr, faces between two and 20 years in prison if convicted on charges, which include maintaining an improper relationship between a teacher and student. He may also be fined $10,000. The Quinlan Independent District Board is expected to decide on a proposed suspension and termination of Carr at a board meeting next week.

For an adult who is charged with sexual assault of a minor, rape, or indecency with a minor, the potential ramifications of any conviction can be devastating. If convicted, a person may be looking at years in prison or a lengthy probation as well as being a registered sex offender which will follow him for the rest of his life.  This information may be easily accessible to potential employers, neighbors, and landlords.  It also limits where the individual may visit, work and live.

Teachers and college students may be especially at risk for statutory rape charges. College students who are dating high school girls frequently end up unknowingly getting charged with statutory rape. While the difference between these two persons may be just a year or even less, it may still constitute statutory rape if one of the persons is below the age of consent–which is 17 in Texas.

As Texas sexual assault lawyers, we often find that existing sex laws can be extremely vague, outdated or come with a high potential for abuse. For those accused of sex crimes or sexual assault against a minor, the realization that they are facing extremely serious charges can be shocking. It's very important for persons accused of statutory rate or sexual assault on a minor, to consult with an experienced Texas sex crime attorney.
