Causes of Unintended Acceleration in Toyota Vehicles
There has been no shortage of theories for the causes of the sudden acceleration in Toyota cars, and the automaker has seemed completely clueless about the reasons for these accidents.
Toyota first blamed incompatible flat floor mats for an accident in California that killed four people in 2009. According to the automaker, the floor mats in the Toyota Lexus in that crash were not compatible with the Lexus. Floor mats were the basis of the first Toyota recall after the fatal accident.
Toyota then announced another recall blaming faulty gas pedals for the problem. According to the company, a faulty design of the pedal causes the accelerator to stick even after the driver has removed his foot from the pedal.
The third, and most likely cause for the acceleration, is malfunctioning in the electronic throttle control systems in these defective Toyota vehicles. The company has refused to admit that any issues with these electronic throttle control systems could be responsible for the unintended acceleration. This is even as several auto safety experts have blamed wiring in the electronics in Toyota cars and pickups for the sudden acceleration. The cars and pickups included in the Toyota recall have greater amounts of electronics installed, compared to vehicles by other automakers. Malfunctioning wiring could lead to several complications, one of which could likely be the sudden acceleration of the vehicle to high speeds.
An investigative report broadcast by ABC has probed this possibility in depth. The investigation involved an engineer, David Gilbert of the University of Illinois, manipulating wires in the electronics in Toyota vehicles and getting the vehicles to accelerate to high speeds. Toyota, not surprisingly, has dismissed these investigations as staged and unrealistic.
There are other even more interesting theories about the causes for the sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles. Space radiation experts claim that space rays are interfering with the wiring in these vehicles, causing the cars to accelerate high speeds. The effects of space radiation on consumer products has been researched and documented. Minute space rays can interfere with aircraft and spacecraft, which is why airplanes come built with mechanisms to thwart these rays. They also seem to impact cell phones and computers. According to radiation experts, the vast amounts of electronic wiring in Toyota vehicles make these cars susceptible to interference from space radiation.
