Laredo Family Killed in 18-Wheeler Accident – Texas Truck Accident Lawyers

The three members of a single Southeast Texas family, who were killed in an accident involving their Toyota and a tractor-trailer near Laredo over the weekend, have now been identified as Manuel Arizola, 21, his girlfriend Johana Sandoval, 21 and their baby of 11 months old Romen Arizola.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred on Saturday morning on Interstate 35. The family was in a Toyota, and headed to San Antonio.  The tractor-trailer was southbound on Interstate 35, when it crossed the median and struck the oncoming Toyota carrying the young family. The two young parents and their baby were killed instantly. The man’s younger sister, Victoria  Arizola was also in the car. She suffered serious injuries, and was rushed to the Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

It’s a tragedy anytime there is a fatality in an auto accident, and even more so, when an entire family is lost in this manner. Our hearts go out to the Sandoval and Arizola families who have lost their son and daughter in this tragedy.

Investigations into the accident are going on, and there is no way of knowing for certain why the truck driver crossed the median. There are any number of reasons why this could happen.

As Houston truck accident lawyers, we know that a momentary lack of attention or a lapse in judgment while driving, can occur because of distractions, fatigue or any other factor. A tired trucker is more likely to lose control of his vehicle, or make driving errors. Investigators here are likely to look into the driver’s logbooks to see how many hours he had been driving without a break. Similarly, distractions like using cell phones or snacking can also contribute to driving errors.

Both these issues are major truck safety issues across the country, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration as well as the Department of Transportation have been engaged in serious efforts to tackle trucker driver fatigue and distracted driving by truck drivers.
