Houston Resident Killed in Motorcycle Accident – Houston Personal Injury Lawyers

A 55-year-old Houston resident was killed last week in a head-on accident involving a motorist who veered into oncoming traffic.  According to Waller County police, a Honda Civic crossed into eastbound traffic, colliding head-on with Thomas Meagher who was riding the motorcycle. Meagher was declared dead at the scene.

Our thoughts are with the Meagher family as they try to deal with this tragic loss.  From all accounts, it seems like the Meagher was following all traffic rules. He was riding safely, and was wearing a helmet.  Motorcycle awareness campaigns in Texas focus strongly on educating motorcyclists about helmet use and safe driving techniques. However, they fail to invest the same kind of effort and time in educating motorists about the need to share roads with all.  Often, as Houston motorcycle accident lawyers, we see motorcyclists doing everything right, and still bearing the brunt of motorist’s negligence.

As Houston motorcycle accident attorneys, we also see that motorcyclists unfairly get blamed for every crash. While there are a few motorcyclists who revel in speeding and stunts on the streets, most of them tend to be conscientious riders. Unfortunately, fingers get pointed at the motorcycle rider even before an investigation begins.

Back in the 70s, when motorcycle accident fatalities across the country were at their peak, the government commissioned a study into motorcycle crash causation, headed by Harry Hurt.  That investigation culminated in the Hurt’s Report.  Two of the biggest findings of the study are valid to this day.

  1. Most motorcycle accidents are caused by negligent motorists.
  2. Helmet use is important in preventing fatalities.

Unfortunately, while the victim here did all he could to be safe by wearing a helmet, he could do nothing to protect himself from others’ negligence.
