Houston Personal Injury Lawyers Support Establishment of CPSC Product Injury Database – Texas Product Liability Attorneys

Recall

It’s the kind of product safety initiative that Houston product liability lawyers believe will keep consumers safe. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has voted 3-2 to set up a product injury database that will contain information about thousands of consumer products, as well as injuries linked to these.

As things now stand, there is very little information Americans have about the products they buy. From strollers to electronic appliances, consumers in Houston have minimal information to prepare them for a purchase. The CPSC website does provide product injury information, but this information only involves products that have been recalled by a manufacturer.

It’s important to understand here that a recall may be initiated several months after a defect is found in the product. That’s because manufacturers and federal safety officials may spend months hammering out the finer points of a recall, before it can be made public. During this period of time, consumers may continue to purchase the product without any knowledge that these have been linked to injuries elsewhere in the country.

Not anymore. By March of next year, the CPSC will establish a product injury database that will contain information about thousands of products. All you have to do before you buy a product is look it up on the website to see if it has been linked to any injury complaints from anywhere in the country.

Obviously, this greatly empowers consumers in Texas, and gives them the power to make safe and informed decisions about the products they buy. Manufacturers have been nitpicking about the fact that they will have very little control over what information makes it to the list.  The agency has assured them that it will share information about any complaints with manufacturers, and that they will be given a chance to respond to complaints.

As Houston personal injury attorneys, we believe it’s about time consumer interests were placed before manufacturer concerns.
