12-year-old Texas Boy In Custody after Midnight Police Chase – Houston Criminal Defense Lawyers
A 12-year-old boy, who took sheriff’s deputies on a wild midnight chase as he drove his father’s pickup truck across Fayette County, was taken into police custody following the chase last month.
The unidentified boy apparently took his father’s pickup truck without permission, and began to drive on interstate Highway 10. Fayette County Sheriff deputies were alerted by residents who informed them that a pickup with no headlights on, was traveling on the highway. The deputies tried to stop the truck, and the boy panicked, and led the deputies on a 14-mile chase through the county.
It was a highly dangerous situation with the boy driving at speeds of more than 100 mph and no headlights on. Cameras mounted on the dash of the police car show the pickup racing wildly past 18-wheelers. The deputies finally managed to spike the pickup’s tires, and bring it to a stop, before the boy could cause an accident and seriously injure himself or other motorists on the highway.
The boy was taken into custody and remained at a detention center where a judge has ruled he will stay, until the investigation into the incident is complete. According to officers, the boy’s parents didn’t even know that he had taken the pickup truck. As Houston child injury lawyers, we find that odd.
This is just another story that reminds Houston injury lawyers of the need for better vigilance over our children. The boy is already in a bit of trouble, but he would have been in worse trouble if he had caused an accident with his wild and reckless speeding.
The preteens can be difficult years as any parent who has these children at home knows. It’s all the more reason why talk about auto safety issues needs to be a big priority at home. Pre-teens are just a couple of years away from getting their drivers licenses, and it’s important that parents lay down a firm safety foundation at home.
